Facebook Releases Completely Rebuilt iPhone App

Facebook for iPhone
Facebook has released a completely rebuilt version of their iOS app. As some of you who used the application may know, the app was horrible. It was slow, and an absolute pain to use.

We’ve been testing it out a bit. Not a lot, as we just downloaded it, but it already feels much snappier than the previous version. Of course we are sitting at home with our wifi connection, but it didn’t seem to make much of a difference before, either. The app was just poorly-built. No more screaming “Facebook for iPhone sucks!”
Here is the list of improvements:

What’s New in Version 5.0

We’ve rebuilt the app so it’s faster and easier to use.
* Scrolling through news feed is faster than ever
* New banner lets you tap to quickly see more stories – no need to refresh
* Photos open fast and close with one downward swipe
* Instant access to your notifications
You can check out the app here:

Turn your iPhone 4/4S into the next-gen iPhone with this $30 back plate mod kit

While we certainly cannot vouch for the quality of this “iPhone 5 conversion mod kit” for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, it appears to be a back-plate mod kit based on leaked next-generation iPhone designs. Available in both black and white, the kit is based on the next-gen metal iPhone backs that we first posted high-resolution photos of in May. The mod kit is currently shipping worldwide within seven days for $30. The sellers claim the kit uses “camera glass lens of same quality as original iPhone back panel,” while the back plate includes “glass-like acrylic” and aluminum.

The kit also comes with Phillips and Pentalobe screwdrivers. The iPhone 5 mod kit is available here, and a short promo video of the result is below. For comparison, images of the “real” thing are here.

iOS 6 beta no longer requires Apple ID password for free apps

With the latest beta of iOS 6, users are no longer required to enter their Apple ID password when downloading free software from the App Store.

The change, currently available to developers testing the latest preview of iOS, was first discovered by a poster on Reddit and highlighted on Monday by Cult of Mac. It's unknown whether that functionality will come to users in the final release of iOS 6, when it launches for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch this fall.

Since the first beta of iOS 6 was released in June, developers have already been able to re-download previously purchased applications without entering the password for their Apple ID account. By removing the need to enter a password when downloading free software in the latest beta, it would appear that Apple is looking to cut down on the number of times iOS users are prompted to enter their Apple ID password.

With an Apple ID account on an iOS device, a user's credit card information is stored and content like applications and music can be quickly purchased by simply entering the account password. But many of the selections available on the App Store are free software which does not result in a charge to the user's credit card.

Regardless, in all current public builds of Apple's iOS mobile operating system, users are required to enter their password. If a transaction was completed recently, users are given a 15-minute window during which additional purchases can be made.

Stores

One notable exception to the 15-minute window applies to in-app purchases. That change was made by Apple with iOS 4.3 in March of 2011 in response to complaints from parents whose children made expensive in-app purchases when using so-called "free to play" games available on the App Store.

iOS also includes built-in restrictions that can allow users to disable functions like installing or deleting applications from the App Store. In-app purchases can also be specifically barred from the built-in Settings application in iOS.

The App Store itself will also be redesigned and improved when iOS 6 launches later this year. It sports a new look with a black theme at the top and bottom, and user interface tweaks like allowing applications to install in the background without returning users to the home screen.

OS X Mountain Lion Free Upgrade Form Goes Live For Eligible Buyers

As per Apple's promise of delivering a free Mountain Lion upgrade to customers who've bought a Mac on or after June 11th, a web form has gone live on Apple's site that asks for purchase details and delivers a redeem code upon approval.

Apple calls it the "OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date Program."

Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 11, 2012 and the date when Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from the date Mountain Lion becomes available to make their Up-To-Date request.
Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac after Mountain Lion becomes available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from the date they purchase their Mac to make their Up-To-Date request.
The form asks for the date and place of purchase, personal details of the buyer, and serial number of the Mac.
mountain-lion-uptodate
According to MacRumors, who gave the whole process a try, the redeem code is sent via email, in a password protected PDF, the password for which is sent in another email. The code can then be entered on the Mac App Store, once Mountain Lion goes live. (For the entire text of the email, head over to MacRumors.)

We'd advise you to wait for the release, and only then fill in the form at this link.
Although the release date for Mountain Lion isn't announced yet, it's widely anticipated that the OS would go live on the Mac App Store a day after Apple's earnings call, which is scheduled for Tuesday. OS X Lion release followed the same pattern.

That makes Wednesday, the 25th, a very likely date for release.
Mountain Lion would be available for $19.99

ChargeCard For iPhone and Android

ChargeCard is a USB cable that’s thin enough to fit easily into your wallet, purse or pocket.

Not only does ChargeCard look good, suddenly your iPhone charging cable actually fits in your wallet. How many times have we had to ask somebody else for a charging cable? All the time and that seems to come to an end.
ChargeCard works with TVs, laptos, desktops, cable boxes, game consoles, cars, stereos, electric keyboards, drum sets and more.
For those interested, there’s a Kickstarter project currently going for the production of the ChargeCard. Check it out here

Homescreen.me lets you share your iOS device setup with the world

The stock Home screen in iOS looks pretty boring. Luckily, jailbreaking can change that. It opens the door to a whole world of customization, including tweaks, icon packages and tons of other theming possibilities.
And if you like customizing your device, and want to share your iPad or iPhone setup with the world, there’s a new service that lets you do that. Homescreen.me finally came out of private beta this week…
Homescreen.me is a simple service that allows you to show off screenshots of your iOS Home screens. It’s been around for about two years now, but only just became available to the public.
The service is free, and enables you to upload one screenshot for both your iPhone and iPad. There’s also a spot on your landing page to explain your setups — what tweaks, themes you’re using — and there’s a nice Explore feature that allows you to browse through other people’s devices.
That’s pretty much it for Homescreen.me, there’s not much to it. And while the simplicity is nice from a design standpoint, it’s clearly missing some features. Social network integration, for example, would be a handy addition.
Nevertheless, it’s a cool idea. And we encourage you to setup an account. In fact, feel free send us links to your Homescreen.me profiles on Twitter. We’ll retweet the best ones.

iOS 6 Beta 3 For Apple TV Brings Expanded AirPlay Control

iOS 6 beta 3 of Apple TV adds the ability to streaming audio through the headphones AirPlay.
Apple has released
iOS 6 Beta 3 to developers a few days ago, we mentioned to you many of the features that came to your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch in this demo version, and now it's time to talk a little bit about one of the new features that came for the Apple TV.

Running the latest software, the Apple TV will detect any AirPlay-enabled speakers on a user's home network, and they will be available to select for sound output. The new feature is said to be fully operational in the latest pre-release build of iOS 6, allowing users to send audio from any content, including video, to wireless AirPlay-capable speakers.

Currently, an Apple TV running the latest publicly released version of iOS only has the ability to receive AirPlay content. The existing AirPlay settings on the Apple TV simply to turn the feature on or off, and set a password.

Apple's interest in the Apple TV interface since the reform began, and feature the ability to reorder the applications available, and now adds support for streaming audio through the AirPlay

Apple has just issued a third beta iOS 6 Beta 3

Apple has just issued a third beta build of iOS 6 to developers. The new software has not yet appeared on Apple’s iOS Developer Center though devices running iOS 6 Beta 2 can update over-the-air (go to Settings > General > Software Update). The update prompt mentions only “bug fixes and improvements” so we’re doing some digging as we speak and will update when we find out more…
So, iH8sn0w was wrong.

In case you were wondering, it’s a 374MB OTA delta download for your iPhone 4s and a 424MB download for the third-generation iPad.
So far, we’ve identified one new feature, a brand new item in Settings dedicated to preferences for Apple’s own Maps application (thanks, @NicksiPhone5).
Once in Maps settings, you can choose between miles or kilometers for units labels, as well as set your desired language, label sizes and turn-by-turn navigation volume, independently of the system volume.

Screenshot via 9to5Mac
Another subtle tweak: Safari now displays nice icons for bookmarks, reading list and history in place of worded labels. Plus, Safari on iPad feaures a handy syncing progress indicator right below the reading list icon in the toolbar.

Full changelog is too long to include here, so head over at 9to5Mac for your iOS 6 Beta 3 release notes.
Apple promised to release iOS 6 for public consumption this fall, but wouldn’t specify an exact date. It’s fairly safe to assume Cupertino would let it out of the gate alongside the next iPhone, itself rumored to launch in September or October.

iOS 6 will be a major update to Apple’s operating system powering its iPhone, iPod touch and iPad mobile devices. It’s gonna have system-wide Facebook integration, Apple’s own headline Maps service, an enhanced Siri version, a better Phone app, Shared Photo Streams via iCloud and lots more.
